Show Notes

"I treat every minute like an hour and then it seems like a year has just flashed by again.  Twenty years later, I'm still upside down."  December 31, 1991 was Phish's third New Year's Eve gig and their largest show at that time with a stated capacity of 4,000.  It took place in the ornate Art Deco "New Aud", built in the 1930's seemingly for just such a purpose with an open floor sans chairs and a wrap-around balcony.  Tickets to the band's first 3-set NYE celebration were $16.50 and the show was sold out with fans traveling great distances to celebrate the end of another great year of Phish.  This was the band's only stand-alone New Year's Eve show and the only three-set NYE show where the new year fell during set II.  The band had recently signed with Elektra and had been working with engineers Kevin Halpin and Jon Altschiller on their third album, A Picture Of Nectar.  Jon was also a taper and self-proclaimed Phish freak.  He taped the show to two separate sources (both DAT) - audience with mics at the FOH position and a soundboard patch from Paul Languedoc.  Two decades later, Jon, now the full-time livephish.com remote engineer, combined the tracks to create the matrix master for the New Aud release.  Mastered by Fred Kevorkian, this unique source is a proper document of a classic show, combining the qualities of both recordings and harnessing the stunning music and electricity that characterized this special performance.  The three-set New Year's Eve show became a hallmark of Phish's years to come - a ritual that has occurred nearly every year the band has been active.  The New Aud celebrates more than three hours of Prime Phish and is a perfect 20th anniversary view inside this formative show.  "It's a small world, but we all start out small." * this show featued the debut of "The Minkin" - a paint-on-lexan (plexiglass) backdrop created by Marjorie Minkin that the band used in various forms for years   * Sparkle, Esther and Wilson included cursing commentary from The Final Word - a keychain Christmas gift Trey was playing with onstage   * during Bouncing Around The Room, superballs fell from the balcony   * Weekapaug Groove included a tease of  "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"   * Lawn Boy included a tease of jam/on "The Christmas Song"   * recorded and mixed by Jon Altschiller at Chiller Sound (assisted by Danielle Warman)   * mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering   * post-production by Kevin Shapiro   * read essay by Kevin Shapiro   * Don't Bogart That Joint (Ingber/Wagner*) * Your Pet Cat (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnell) * Kill Devil Falls (Anastasio/Marshall) * Back on the Train (Anastasio/Marshall) * My Soul (Chenier#) * Lawn Boy (Anastasio/Marshall) * Divided Sky (Anastasio) * Ya Mar (Ferguson^) * Character Zero (Anastasio/Marshall) * Walls Of The Cave (Anastasio/Marshall) * 2001 (Deodato**) * Carini (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnell) * Twist (Anastasio/Marshall) * Piper (Anastasio/Marshall) * Ass Handed (Fishman) * Piper (Anastasio/Marshall) * Sand (Anastasio/Lawton/Markellis/Marshall) * Slave to the Traffic Light (Abrahams/Anastasio/Pollak) * More (Anastasio) * Petrichor (Anastasio) * Auld Lang Syne (Traditional##) * Suzy Greenberg (Pollak) * No Men In No Man's Land (Anastasio/Marshall) * Breath And Burning (Anastasio) * Tide Turns (Anastasio) * 555 (Gordon/Murawski) * Ocelot (Anastasio/Marshall) * First Tube (Anastasio/Lawton/Markellis) * Loving Cup (Jagger/Richards^^)   All songs copyright Who Is She? "Coil must be hard to play because these early debut versions are so perfect they make the ones of 2 and 3 and 4.0 sound terrible in comparison. Page’s improvisational piano solo at the end is still amazing up to 2023 but Trey must not practice it or it must be really hard to play like Glide Foam Esther Horn or Weigh some songs are just tough to hit all notes on the head. This show is amazing. I love these classic old shows. Every song is played w heart. From Esther to Foam Sky for the coma guy so cool and kind of Trey to give a nod to his favorite song the stash and I don’t even like stash is played so well it’s hard to shit on this version and it’s not even type 2 it’s just solid type 1 The Tweezer is great. Wilson was weird until 1995 when the audience made the song better and what we now know as the chant so I skip over that but the cursing is hilarious in Esther Sparkle and Wilson Wilson for me is like Free like a fine wine it only got better w age and years of fermentation. The bass Mike jam never existed in 1995. Free only got good in 1997 or the end of 96 I’ll have to find the 1st bass solo Free. I like that there music is tested live and gets better and changes over time. Their new songs seem more ready to go in stone like ER SYSF Sigma Oasis were the way they will always be out of the gate and Life Beyond the Dream was best it’s first outing in Blossom 19 so they are evolving as a band. Please Trey that is not a wink wink to play the tube evolve more. Or the song more more. 4.32 is my rating"

"My first show! I was a 16 year old Dead Head and knew nothing about Phish going into the show. 30 years and 225 shows since that night, and I still try and catch as many shows as I can! Thank you Phish!"
