10/31/1998 Thomas & Mack Center , Las Vegas, NV

beardog of salt lake city  (10/31/2009 2:21:29 AM)

Hi all... just home from work and feeling a little bummed that I'n not giggin' and jiggin' with the family of friend I've collected over many years of having the privilege to be a witness to the birth and then amazingly fast growth of this band that changed the way I listen to music. The boys that day in and day out lay it down for us, band members, crew, drivers, security, girl friends, wanna be girl friend, fans, and the open minded people that live in the communities that we are lucky to call our home for one, two, or if we are really luck three or four days, have my complete and undying gratitude and stedfast support. I don't know if many of you have taken the time to smell the flowers as it has been said, but if you can pull yourselves out the self-indulgent state of mind thad a few of you out there presently find yourselves it you might just find you're in one of the most incredibly peaceful and enlightening places on out big blue home... with people that despite there many differences have come from far and near(mostly far) to say hello and dance with you to the music of the most uniquely creative and talented band of our time. When I say Band I mean BAND. Get these four men together and it's magic. It might not always be the set list you imagined on you journey to the show, but I'd lay good money and my only semi tarnished reputation up against the odds that what you want will be forgotten when you get there and get a stellar show that was hand crafted by the band that we all openly love and spend our hard earned $ to travel all over the world to see. Relax... Get yourself and all those around you in a good positive and accepting mood. Baby... you're here!!! It's time to have FUN!!! Hug you buddy and give a deep wet passionate kiss to your loved one... and then open your mind the reality that you are about to experience something special and unique and feel very very very lucky that you're there with like minded people who want to be happy and find something in life that only music and close interpersonal experience with friends and a huge group of strangers can bring. Cheers and have FUN!!!!

Trey and the boys were really on this night. First set was as solid as the third set was trippy. Sandwiched in between was a magical cover of the Velvet Underground's album Loaded. As good as any of the previous three Halloween shows, and my personal favorite by far, Phish gave the crowd a passionate, and at times emotional rendition of this cult favorite. Highlights include a phenomenal Sweet Jane, and Sweet Nuthin sung beautifully by The Chairman to close the set. The mastering of this show is really, really good. If you have three hours to chill on a Friday night, sit back and enjoy this show.

Trey was really off this night. Wolfman's is long but I very much dislike it. Go for Hampton '03, Champlain '97, Woosta '97, texas '98 (!!!), or GW '99 if you want to hear it for real. But the composed section of this Mike's is by far the best I've ever heard. Sweet Jane transcends whatever else was going on with the band this night, beautiful.

Wolfman's!! Wolfman's!! Wolfman's!!

If you want to deliver awesome jams, you gotta bring the noise & Phish does not disappoint (the 46 days from IT & the Wolfman's from Champaign, IL outta ring bells) - eerie yet beautiful music!!

This was the show that made me fall in love with phish (and i still havent even heard the disc with ghost, piper and wolfman.) I mean disc 1 and the filler disc are on point. Fuckking Mikes Song jam is phunky, hose and machine gun in one. Sometimes i feel like '98 was a combination of all the different styles of music phish touched on throughout their career. Amazing, incredible, rediculous, inspirational, pure fucking bliss.

I was there, dressed as Captain Crunch. The Loaded set is far better than the Dark Side set from two days later, I think they just weren't ready with that one, and also they just loved Loaded more. That said, the show the night before (gloriously added bits as filler) was the best I've ever seen them play. The Stash->Manteca is really beautiful. This was a great weekend for Phish. Well worth listening.

If i remember correctly, they did play Dark Side of the Moon (in it's entirety) in Utah a couple of nights later. This was still a great show.

I too made this show, but it left me with bad feelings. I felt partly burned, because the word was they were going to play the Dark Side of the Moon as the musical costume, and then they played Loaded, which was just barely okay. Also, if I recall correctly, Trey also got pissed off and left the stage for a while. Sadly, I left the show somewhat disappointed. Two days later, at the next show in Salt Lake City, they played The Dark Side of the Moon. I then felt really burned. At this point I felt as if they were in the process of jumping the shark. Don't get me wrong, I have been a huge fan a couple of year before I got to see them play the gym at Humboldt State University, and a small building at the Eureka Fairgrounds. and I miss them nearly as much as I miss the Grateful Dead. That is why I was so happy to see signs of touring again. Happy days are here again?
