On November 7, 1996 Phish played their only show to-date at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington, KY - best known as the home of University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball.  Opened in 1976 with a capacity of 23,500 and named for former UK Coach Adolph Rupp, the venue was dubbed "the largest sporting arena in the country."  Phish rolled into Cats country just three shows after their Halloween Remain in Light show and midway into a 35-date national tour.  The band's sixth studio album, Billy Breathes, was released October 15th.  Fall tour started the next day and was heating up on the heels of multiple guest drums and percussion appearances by The Fringe/Surrender to the Air's Bob Gullotti and Santana's Karl Perazzo. The band built upon that energy with driving beats, heavy keys and Trey's percussion setup to propel the music into a new groove-driven amalgam, foreshadowing what was eventually called cow funk.  A Live One had been out for more than a year, but multitrack tapes were still spinning to capture the magic at Rupp Arena - where more than 10,000 UK students and Phishheads got far beyond their $20 worth of vast jams, deep exploration and rarities. Rupp Arena set I highlights included a Chalk Dust Torture opener, the only Weigh of fall tour and a hot Stash.  Waste and the tour's first Guyute came next, followed by a Free, Tela combination that featured the Billy Breathes hit single paired with fall’s only Tela.  An incendiary Character Zero closed the set.  The Rupp's set II kicked off with a Suzy Greenberg opener that set up the experimental, top-shelf (longest-ever at the time) Bathtub Gin.  The Rupp Gin was a masterpiece that showcased a multiverse of creativity capped with a warped outro that melted right into Hold Your Head Up.  After Bathtub Gin, HYHU, Fish emerged from behind his kit with his Electrolux vacuum for the only Bike of fall tour.  A monumental You Enjoy Myself ended set II and alluded to the Frankenstein encore which put the exclamation point on one of the great sets of fall '96. 11/7/96 was recorded by Paul Languedoc to digital multitrack and mixed and mastered by Jon Altschiller.  The show is available 3/7/16 via: the LivePhish+ App and as MP3, FLAC, and full-resolution FLAC-HD downloads at LivePhish.com.

"this YEM might feature one the best Mike bass jams I've ever heard. Mayne WhAt?!"

"Early" regional shows amongst the finest.. 8/8/2021 11:13:45 PM

"Imagine this....'94 in Charleston,WV and my1st live experience and it turns into what is the famous Game Hoist show (*one other similar Game Hoist was played in CA I think..but wasn't the true and full set list like WV..hence not an official combo)...in '95 at Louisville Palace Theatre (or Gardens Thtre) another very memorable show & set list...in '96 at Rupp in Lex was one of the most excellent shows I've ever seen in person or otherwise and w/ BTG and yem both having over 24min lengths in one set..and by the way just read the remaining set list..well those are performances that do not exist in this era I gotta say...Throw in the 96 Deercreek IN..or ANY deercreek run of shows from 95-2005 for that matter...i suppose it's coincide about the region of where they took place and more about the time and era we were in...from '92-2005 this was the tightest most precise in sync group of players and i mean locked in...from opener to encore and then for 35 straight nights and 13 straight years... Demand, Shaggy Dog, BBFCFM are a few I'd like to hear sometime on a stream during the tour"

"Been going through a lot of 96 shows lately, really good stuff, this show is a great example! The gin and YEM are insanity but the first set is played super nicely as well, I really love a well played Guelah so this show really does it for me. Sad to see so few shows from 96 on here. Release more from 96 please, MSG, Omaha, or Hershey maybe? All would be awesome"

Weight, Finally? 11/16/2019 1:58:48 PM

"35 nights Trey and his sticks, I loved 1996. I only remember one consistency on first halk of tour. After West Palm Beach, all that would seem to please a newly refuddled batch of fans was Destiny (gamehendge always at time, only been 2 years, 5 month ish) or weight? Well in night 17ish mid way thru incredible tour came the most popular Weight I can remember to date. It was like the response Wedge got in 93-96. Always a crowd picker uper. This show I notice they clearly are still remaining In the light of beats. Here and there same destination, different path, subtle and seamLess beauty in those moments! Check it out... "

"What were they thinking when they "mastered" this show for public consumption?? The dynamic range is horrible, as in, it took effort to make it this bad. The only releases that seem to get any respect in regards to (lack of) compression are vinyl and the high-res Junta and Lawn Boy. This Rupp show is one of the worst examples of losing the Loudness Wars."
