Show Notes

On June 17, 1994 Phish played the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the largest and most ornate room in The Rave/Eagles Club complex.  The landmark “Million Dollar Ballroom” was opened in 1927 with an oval wooden dance floor and domed ceiling ringed by balconies, with a capacity of about 1,500.  It was Phish’s only show in the haunted ballroom but their second performance in the building, having played The Rave in spring 1992.  This was the “O.J. Show” performed during O.J. Simpson’s slow-speed Bronco chase.  Starting just before showtime and unbeknownst to the audience (O.J. had a cell phone in 1994 but most fans didn’t), the band was following O.J.’s progress along the freeways of Los Angeles.  To say this affected the show would be an understatement.  Phish channelled that crazy American energy and injected the juice into the music. The result is no secret – the O.J. Show is a classic introductory Phish tape. Highlights from 6/17/94 set I included the Runaway Jim opener dedicated to O.J., a dynamic Foam, Split Open And Melt, and Punch You In The Eye > Bathtub Gin.  All of set II was a highlight, a Peak Phish excursion at the height of summer 1994, wound into a historic soundtrack.  The band thrice showcased their latest song, Simple, during set II: in its usual slot out of Mike’s Song, a unique mashup with I Am Hydrogen, and within the Harpua narration.  Harpua also featured the band’s attempt to cool down the sweltering audience, and Gamehendge references foreshadowing events of the next few weeks. The verdict on the O.J. Show is unanimous - this is must-hear Phish. 6/17/94 Milwaukee was recorded by Paul Languedoc to 2-track soundboard DAT and mastered by Fred Kevorkian.   - O.J. references throughout the show including during: Runaway Jim, 2001, Poor Heart, Mike’s Song, Simple, Harpua - Harpua narration includes quotes from Simple and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Kung was chanted very quickly by Trey   - Recorded by Paul Languedoc - Post-Production by Kevin Shapiro - Mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering   -Runaway Jim (Abrahams/Anastasio) -Foam (Anastasio) -Glide (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/Marshall/McConnell) -Split Open and Melt (Anastasio) -If I Could (Anastasio) -Punch You in the Eye (Anastasio) -Bathtub Gin (Anastasio/Goodman) -Scent of a Mule (Gordon) -Cavern (Anastasio/Herman/Marshall) -2001 (Deodato)* -Sample in a Jar (Anastasio/Marshall) -Poor Heart (Gordon) -Mike's Song (Gordon) -Simple (Gordon) -Mike's Song (Gordon) -I Am Hydrogen (Anastasio/Daubert/Marshall) -Simple (Gordon) -I Am Hydrogen (Anastasio/Daubert/Marshall) -Weekapaug Groove (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnell) -Harpua (Anastasio/Fishman) -Kung (Fishman) -Harpua (Anastasio/Fishman) -Sparkle (Anastasio/Marshall) -Big Ball Jam (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/McConnell) -Julius (Anastasio/Marshall) -Frankenstein (Winter)** -Sleeping Monkey (Anastasio/Marshall) -Rocky Top (Bryant/Bryant)***   All songs copyright Who Is She? "Way better sound than 95’ Blossom. Could be they only sold 9,000 of 18,000 tickets for that show. Ohio is lame central. 24’ sees no blossom which is a direct representation as to how fucked the people are becoming here. Wisconsin is gold period every time."

"One of those moments where “history” collides with “your-story”…a strange crossing of timelines, with the band navigating the trip—epic is indeed an understatement. Punch you in the Eye was my first, and started (for me) the tempo that would carry through an amazing second set. 2001 was a fav carried over from ‘93, with Sample being my then-favorite off of Hoist, released that year. Simple was woven in-and-out of everything…a big ball jam to intensify the heat…all exploding into a Frankenstein (my first), that blew everyone away…after Harpua, after Weekapaug… It was so hot, everyone was delirious and unsure if the show was actually over…the encore brought us back to our senses momentarily, but realizing that this band could no longer be contained in small, intimate venues like this. Thanks for the memories!"

"The Harpua story is theatrical. I love it. "

"Pentecostal Phish. Please bring back some of this stuff for this upcoming summer tour. Thank you —ks for putting this one out there. 1.0 phish.. as close as it gets to the yet to be played “Simple Reprise”. "

"I love that with the BBJ Phish was like, “We’re going to let the audience participate in the music, and we’re going to make it suck as much as possible, hahaha!!” This is a great show with amazing segues in and out of Simple and the OJ references thrown in because the whole world was in shock watching OJ Simpson flee from his wife’s murder that day. I especially love the Hydrogen/Simple combo where they’re going back and forth and then playing them both at the same time, truly great stuff. "
