Show Notes

On August 17, 1993 Phish returned to Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas for the second time that year. Also known as Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, the venue is a historic 3,500 capacity auditorium that hosted three Phish shows along with everything from basketball to roller derby and professional wrestling. Kansas City was the last stop before heading out to Colorado and points west for the last six shows of the tour. The band was experimenting with “Including Your Own Hey” listening exercises amidst a groundbreaking summer and the results were palpable. In Kansas City after a memorable St. Louis show (released as St. Louis ’93) Phish took just about every song for a creative ride. Set one kicked off with Wilson > Llama, introducing the first of this show’s multiple micro-jams during Wilson and a reprise of the “Wilson” vocals in Llama. A standout Divided Sky led to the only Weigh > Maze pairing to-date followed by Fluffhead > Fast Enough For You and the then-common bluegrass spiritual Daniel Saw The Stone. Set two soared, from the must-hear 2001 > David Bowie opener (the first such combination) to The Horse played on acoustic guitar with a unique David Bowie mashup. You Enjoy Myself went deep, ending in an Ob La Di, Ob La Da vocal jam while the encore paired the unamplified a cappella Memories with Jimi Hendrix’s Fire – a reminder that summer ‘93 was packed with both. 8/17/93 Kansas City was recorded by Paul Languedoc to DAT and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. PRODUCTION CREDITS •Recorded by Paul Languedoc •Mastered by Fred Kevorkian •Post-Production by Kevin Shapiro NOTES •The Horse had Trey on acoustic guitar and included a David Bowie tease •You Enjoy Myself vocal jam included elements of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Do

"In my opinion, the greatest divided sky ever played. Religious."

"Just another in a long line of great summer 93 shows. What a great year to decide to go on tour as I was making my way across country from Maine to a semester at Humbolt State. It was also a time when the band would still linger around a bit after the shows outside with the not so many of us that were on the road with them. What a great time then off to Red Rocks!!"

"If you like yourself some Mike -- and you know that you do -- he sounds fabulous here. I mean, the overall Mike quotient is really excellent, with the bass getting just about as much of a heft and presence in the mix as you can get in the Before Times (pre-pick/Modulus). Generally, this easy drinker is well-structured with triumphal fruit tempered by mild acidity, fine tannins and a finish that lingers on and on. Drink now until 2092. 93pts."

"August 93’ was something special man. First set is really tight, awesome Divided Sky and Fluffhead. Set two, the 2001 > Bowie is God level Phish. The YEM is off the wall too. Entire show is just raw energetic jamming just like most of the August 93’ run. Mind releasing 8/15/93 next?"

"This show, to me, is 93 Phish Church- A beautiful representation and recording. The intensity and precision the band displays, to my cortex, is the stuff from which dreams are woven- Required listening. What form the band was in!!! The type of show that keeps heads coming back for more imho."
