Show Notes

Late night on August 16, 1996 following the first day of the first Phish mega-festival, The Clifford Ball, the band set up on a flatbed truck that drove through the festival campground after 3am. They played an instrumental, ethereal jam while slowly driving past the camped concertgoers. People heard the music, saw where it was coming from, and joined the procession one-by-one on foot, bicycles, and skateboards. The band was flanked by a horseback mounted patrol but were alone on the dimly lit truck bed with a recordist, who captured the audio on a single microphone. A film crew followed along in carts, documenting the moment for what would become ‘The Clifford Ball’ DVD. For thirty-seven minutes, Phish improvised a continuous piece of music, leaving the lucky few who caught it with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This began a tradition of secret sets that has continued at Phish festivals ever since. In 2022, the complete festival audio was released on vinyl as ‘The Clifford Ball’ 12-LP 25th Anniversary Box Set. The ‘Flatbed Jam’ was also pressed on vinyl and released as a Phish Drygoods bonus companion to the full-show box, and mastered by Fred Kevorkian for digital. "I was there, but also asleep in my tent. I remember the next day when a few people who were less than reliable tried to tell us what happened, we didn’t believe them and I spent the next year thinking they were full of shit until someone else confirmed it! I was always able to believe anything was possible from this band after this stunt."

"i also had the good fortune of being awake and one of the first to notice them...the following two years would be the formative and best times of my life to date!!!!"

"I was lucky enough to still be awake and witness this in person while many were fast asleep sleeping lengthwise in their tents. Heads walked along side the slowly moving truck, fun times, thanks Phish! "

"I was there but fast asleep in my tent. LOL Thanks for releasing this incredible, mellow, relaxing jam! "

"Wasn’t there— listening to this and imagining what it would have been like is also pretty cool. Phish is magical. "
