Show Notes

Bar 17 marks Trey's second solo album in just under a year as he continues his evolution as guitarist, songwriter and improvisationalist to create a kaleidoscopic yet cohesive listening experience, one of his most remarkable albums to date. Recorded on and off over the past three years in a variety of locations including Trey's famed Barn recording studio in Vermont and co-producer Bryce Googin's (Phish, Pavement) Trout Studios in Brooklyn, NY. Joining Trey in the studio were musicians from all eras of Trey's career including members of Phish and various incarnations of Trey's solo band, string players from his "Seis De Mayo" project and longtime collaborator John Medeski along with new friends avant-groovesmiths Benevento/Russo Duo, singer Carmen Keegan (I Nine) and Joan Wasser (Dambuilders, Those Bastard Souls). A musical chameleon at heart, Trey continues to immerse himself comfortably in a variety of sonic environments. Beginning with the familiar sound of Mike Gordon's basswork on the dynamic opening track "Host Across the Potomac", Trey touches on Stones Exile-era riffing ("Dragonfly" and "Mud City") and thrilling guitar solos on the title track and "What's Done", as well as the structured-improv crowd favorite "Goodbye Head" and the expanded instrumentation of "Cincinnatti".

"Absolutely incredible album. Thank you so much for everything Trey, and especially for putting your heart into everything. This one has tons of heart, and is so deep. It's wild to me that Shadow hasn't ever been played apparently? That, or Cincinnati could be a great set closer maybe. Either way, this album is magnificent, and hits so hard. Amazing work."

I take it back. 5/2/2007 7:04:35 PM

"It`s a great album, just has to grow on you I guess."

"Empty House is a beautiful, sweet love song. I like it a lot, despite its sappiness. The title track, Bar 17, aside from the extended instrumental part, is so tender and sensitive it makes me want to wretch. If I wasn`t such a huge Trey/Phish fan, and I heard this album, I would laugh at whoever put it on because it is so pansy-ish. There seem to be a lot of artists lately who think it`s a good idea to blend symphonic, classical style arrangements with pop or rock music. I`ve never liked that idea. When I heard Trey do it I wanted to yell aloud, "Say it ain`t so, Trey Anastasio!" But, who am I kidding? I know this album will grow on me. I just won`t be playing it around any friends of mine. There are always good songs and bad songs, on any album, by any artist. I just wish the bad-ass side of Trey would come through a little more often. "

"the fact of the matter is that trey is capable of writing some pretty horrible lyrics without the assistance of tom. i know he`s trying to be more "meaningful" with his song writing but does he have to be a total sap? that`s how it come across to me. the album has it`s moments but overall it`s lacking creativity and imagination. i don`t want to come across as one of those who can`t let go of what has passed, ya` know, the ol` "it`s not phish" routine, but since the demise of phish trey has been left struggling in it`s shadow and i really want to see him rise above that but it`s never gonna happen if he continues in this fashion. mike is a diffrent story, seems he has his head on straight. also, i think trey needs to ditch producer bryce groggin and hook up with someone who is gonna tell trey how it is, someone like nigel goodrich (who`s most well known for his work with radiohead & beck). goodrich helped paul mccartney produce his best album in 10 years and i really think he could do the same for trey. regardless, something has gotta give..."

"I was so excited to get this CD. I love it! I listen to it on my drive to Chicago all most all the way! Multiple times. Favorites- Host across the potomac, Let me lie, Gloomy skys, and I love Shadow. Trey you can go any direction you want. Your true fans and friends will go with you any where, and back again. Thank you for your spirit and love for the music. Just keep Smilein, it looks good on you! Went to Chicago shows and Fox shows his new music sounds and feels so good live! The whole band rocked it out and took me on a great ride of emotions. You can tell they all enjoy the Music, as did I. Love you Trey! "
