Show Notes

* On December 6, Phish will release Hampton/Winston-Salem '97, a brand new 7-CD box set, showcasing three complete shows recorded Live November 21 & 22, 1997 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA and November 23, 1997 Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum, Winston-Salem, NC, in the midst of Phish's legendary 1997 Fall Tour. Hampton/Winston-Salem '97 contains all the music played over these three shows for a total of 45 songs (8 hours of music from Paul Languedoc's stereo soundboard mix, remastered by Fred Kevorkian). The Box includes never-before-heard material from soundchecks at both venues. The 1997 Hampton Coliseum shows were the band's first two-night stand at Hampton Coliseum - a venue they have played a total of fifteen times including a two-night stand in 1998 (released as Hampton Comes Alive) and a trio of reunion shows in 2009. The shape and feel of the venue have earned it the nickname "The Mothership" among fans. The next show after Hampton 1997 took place at Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina - another familiar venue where Phish also performed in 1994, 1995 and 1998. These shows were a memorable triad for the band and fans. They are among the most requested shows for release from the Phish Archives and make up a compelling slice of the twenty-two-show tour that stretched from Las Vegas to Albany. The Hampton/Winston-Salem 97 shows were packed with notable renditions of classics including "Split Open And Melt", "AC/DC Bag", "Slave To The Traffic Light", "Mike's Song", "Halley's Comet", "Tweezer", "Run Like An Antelope", "Stash" and "Bathtub Gin". The band also showcased a wide variety of newer covers from the debut of the Rolling Stones' "Emotional Rescue" to Del McCoury's "Beauty Of My Dreams", Jimi Hendrix's "Izabella", Clifton Chenier's "My Soul" and even an impromptu take on War's "Low Rider". The Hampton/Winston-Salem '97 shows also showcased newer originals like "Dogs Stole Things", "Ghost", "Piper" and the brand-new-for-fall instrumental "Black-Eyed Katy", which is the only song repeated on the release.

"A fire hose of fire hose from start to finish. Don't sleep on the soundcheck for some squishy contemplative weirdness."

"Please Please Please release 11/21/95 from Winston-Salem. I beg of you. My first show."

"But in answer to another guys question I would take this one out of the three shows personally for the 31 min bathtub, the theme from the bottom and the addictive BEK. "

"I find these shows sparse and minimalist compared to a year later when I jumped on board. I'm not trying to be the one negative voice here or anything I just am saying what my first impressions without letting emotion get involved are. I mean I can hear the beginnings of where they would go from here quite clearly. Like whenever page hits the ring mod loop or getS on moog. But really sparse and minimalist is a nice way of saying kinda boring. Go ahead... I know....Sacriledge!!! But it's just my feeling after where I began my phish journey. I find 98' and 99-00 as well as 03' jams all to be way more interesting than the best jams of these three nites. I would take the Island tour or fukokua as well as the IT fest over this stuff most days. I still love and enjoy it. One of my fav thema from the bottoms. I like me some BEK...although I also like moma, was ther for the first moma actually, with ensuing dance and subsequent realization that phish phans don't want to be told how to dance really..lol! And the phish historian in me appreciates all of phish. I mean I also listen to lots of Giant country horns shows and one set openers from santana tours for crying out loud so I love all tht this band does basically. I'm just throwing in my worthless two cents. Peace"

"Because Moma Dance is a product of Black Eyed Katy. Like Taste is a product of Fog That Surrounds. These songs evolved into something else. That's what makes Phish awesome....There is contingency of phans that prefer BEK to Moma and wish it had never evolved. I like Moma and some versions have really gone there 6-24-00 for example. But BEK was an emotional powerhouse just the few times it was played. Would have liked to hear it more especially stretched out before it became Moma. But to each his own. 2 different songs though.
