Show Notes

On August 12, 1998 Phish played outdoors at Vernon Downs – a harness racetrack in the town of Vernon, NY.  This was the last regular show of 23 U.S. dates leading up to Lemonwheel, a tour dubbed the Summer Of Covers due to near-nightly bustouts of new cover songs.  It was Phish’s only Vernon show and a homecoming for Jon Fishman, who grew up in nearby Syracuse.  Vernon’s general admission, open field set the stage for a pre-festival barnburner. Among set I highlights were the La Grange > Makisupa Policeman > Funky Bitch opening sequence, Possum dedicated to Jeff Holdsworth, and a transcendent Ramble On > Slave To The Traffic Light set closer.  Set II was a set-long Mike’s Groove, from a potent Mike’s Song > Simple > Rift through a fiery Loving Cup > Sleeping Monkey > Weekapaug Groove.  The Encore featured summer’s last new cover - Phish’s only Burning Down The House (sung as “Vernon Down the House”) followed by You Enjoy Myself at Fish’s request.  All in all this was an old-school, rowdy rocker with some serious jams throughout. 8/12/98 Vernon was recorded by Paul Languedoc to 2-track soundboard DAT and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. The show is available 2/13/18 via: the LivePhish+ App and as MP3, FLAC and FLAC HD downloads at LivePhish.com. - First time played: Burning Down The House - PRODUCTION CREDITS: Recorded by Paul Languedoc Post-Production by Kevin Shapiro Mastered by Fred Kevorkian at Kevorkian Mastering

"Today in Phish history: On Wednesday August 12, 1998 Phish played at Vernon Downs in Vernon, New York before heading up to Limestone Maine for their Lemonwheel festival. And yes, I was at this most amazing show! My general admission PTBM ticket cost $27. I went with Amber and Duane in my blue Toyota Corolla with Pennsylvania tags with a “Weekapaugruven” sticker on the back bumper, a “play it Leo” and “Vermont’s Phinest” sticker in both back side windows. It was such a different set up. It was a race track. It was all general admission, all outside and it was hot. I ran into Dr. Scott, my chiropractor right before the show started. I started the show towards the front on Page side and getting that “La Grange“ opener was one of the most amazing musical experiences of my life! I think you all know by now that I absolutely love Phish’s version of that song and this sadly was the last time I got it. But thanks to technology, I can listen to it whenever I want. But seriously guys PLEASE #bringbacklagrange I love the vibe of this show! It was a hometown show for Fishman, the last show of summer tour before the festival, lots of Trey banter and lots of their friends and family from what it sounds like. Love the shoutouts to Fishman’s high school band Frodo! It all just makes for a great concert vibe! My highlights other than the opener: “Makisupa Policeman” with the “burning down” line. The shoutout to Jeff Holdsworth at the beginning of “Possum.” I love getting a Zero before set close and yeah after came my second and last to date “Ramble On.” Pretty sure I’ve conveyed that I prefer most songs when done by Phish as opposed to the original artist and I am totally okay with that. But this one had strong “Cocaine” teases that are so close to a mashup that even I noticed them. It’s remarkable how beautifully they were able to go into “Slave To The Traffic Light!” The jam and “Ramble On” teases in that Slave were unreal! The second set “Mike’s Song” > “Simple” contains stellar jams. “Rift” had an extra high energy. The “Weekapaug Groove” finally made its appearance and was the right energy from start to finish. Pretty much blown away by the “Burning Down The House” sorry, Vernon Down the House! I mean I realize that Phish was consistently playing new and old covers in the summer of 1998 but this was just next level for me. I want Fishman’s requests to always be announced because it adds more to the version. I’m looking at you “You Enjoy Myself!” The HYHU and Mission: Impossible theme teases in YEM elevated it so much that I was floating in the parking lot right after. Along with the excitement of heading to Lemonwheel it lessened the tension of Duane getting into a fender bender with my car as we were leaving. See my TikTok @gettingreadyfortour "
