Reviews

Been a long time 3/9/2022 8:46:55 AM

"This was my first show back since 03. And, man was I impressed. After listening back, there is a possibly some attendance bias. The show, however, is still pretty darn great. There are a lot of reasons I didn’t see the band for the last 19 years. The principal reason for my departure was a lack of musical adventure. I’m sure people will bash me for not being that impressed with 3.0. I’m happy to have the debate. I’ve listened to this band for 75% of my 41 years on this Earth. I feel like that entitles me to some clout with my opinion. More or less, if the band isn’t producing groove-based improvisation, that is sustained and purposeful, I’m out. I’m not saying what they have been doing the last decade wasn’t great. It just wasn’t for me. If the music moves you, I’m ecstatic for you. Setlists that contain dozens of 5 minute songs are not my thing I saw my first show in 94 (Atlanta Civic Center, sneaky great show), and I didn’t really get into the band until 97. It’s the funk jams that grooved to no end that hooked me. That became less prevalent in 3.0, so I went onto other bands and music. I still kept my toes in the water to see what was happening in the Phish ecosystem. The late 90’s style of improv really started appearing with regularity in 17 and 18. So, I started paying closer attention. Anyways… after Covid settled a bit, I took the plunge and bought a single ticket to this show on my way home from Denver, where I spent the summer. I had been listening to the shows before and was excited. I had no idea what to expect though. Maybe my expectations would leave me disappointed? Well…. as it turns out, this show is full of what I love about Phish. The Mike’s is high energy and goes through all sorts of major/minor contortions. The Bowie is a little messy, but Trey showed (two decades later) that he can still leave my jaw on the floor. The second set is brilliant. Yes, it is sloppy. And yes, Trey bails on ideas quickly (even though his drummer is mid thought and grooving… see the transition from Ghost to Sally). That being said, everyone in that building was having an effing ball. None more than the 4 guys on stage. Say what you will about the boys aging and “not being what they used to be”. I will say, I’m so happy to be back! The last 2 minutes of waves is possibly the happiest I have been in years. Just groooooovin! "

Guy who thinks you're missing the fun 1/16/2022 2:56:19 PM

"The 2nd set was a treasure. it was MEANT to be a hodge podge of sorts, melting of ideas that to me is what makes this band special. that's exactly why I tune in. it's not too hear them play the same songs over and over and TRY LIKE HELL to play it better than b4 to impress me!!!!! The creativity exhibited in this show was lost on many i suppose. much like the reviewer here who called it weird. I can only say that I pity the fools who just don't get it. go listen to some 90s stuff, those compositions are magical. I'll be here in the moment, enjoying whatever art these guys come up with next"

"I'm simply ecstatic about how clear and crisp they've got Fish dialed in on soundboard. Superb Mike's Song and a freakish SOAM! Phish for governor USA! Never heard a cleaner SBD than Summer Tour 2021"

"Weird show, strong points and weak points, Mike’s Song was played exceptionally well, the curtain is always fun, Bathtub Gin was the best jam of the night hands down, and Most events really pulled it together at the end of the second set. Ghost through Twist was a train wreck. I love phish I think they’re the best band in the world, they take risks and sometimes they work out for the best and sometimes they don’t, it’s part of what we all love about the band and this time it just didn’t work out is all. None of the transitions were smooth by any means, it was just song after song being aborted. Sometimes you get the best show of the tour, sometimes you don’t, this was not a good second set by any means and I have no idea how anyone says it is. Gin rules Phish is still the best band in the game, and summer 2021 overall blew the roof off all of our expectations, the story of sally will not hold up with time though. "
