ALI: Fear Eats The Soul 7/17/2012 10:20:23 AM

"I posted this in reply to something 7/7/12 BUT I WANT TO SAY IT HERE TOO SINCE THIS IS THE SHOW IT'S FROM (the Slave) and people checking here for review i want to read this. the Slave played here is outta this world! Slave is one of this Phish's that I can listen to over and over and over and over and multiply those "over agains" by 100 to the 3rd power. As with many Phish songs, (I either listen to Phish in background while I'm working, or laying down with eyes closed, sober, or after some danky-puffs, OR in those now rare but blissful occasions when good, clean liquid is sent my way)...so, as with many Phish's (sic), certain songs give me certain visualizations. Slave is a shining silver spiral stair case rising up out of the soft sand of a beach and which spirals up so high i loose it in the haze of a colorful sundown, while it's rhythm is the tide- easy waves crashing in a mellow warmth around my feet. The band is in one of their totally telepathic orbits and Trey hits every note flawlessly, his guitar phrasing being everything to the level of beauty that's reached. I've read (published reviews/critiques) of Jerry's guitar work VS. (or, compared to) Trey's- SO...MANY...TIMES., i have- and Trey is always portrayed as being more technically proficient but not as soulful, the difference always coming down to Jerry's soulful phrasing VS. Trey's *virtuosic agility (*my words, most reviewers aren't as..."perceptive", to be kind) You can't compare the 2. Both are artists with their own unique visions and style. Both give/gave everything to CREATING something new every-time out and risking what so many other bands/"rock stars" are terrified to risk- making mistakes! OMG (sic)! So that they (Jerry & Trey- I'm discussing them singularly because of the context of this post and because as truly democratic as both bands are, you have to concede that when they make mistakes they stand out to your less focused fans more than if mike or page were to, fishman sometimes i think is a machine, so... haha) but they take risks with an ego-less-ness rarely seen on stage so they can CREATE a shared experience between audience and musician, which is cyclical in it's dynamism and which is the daring basis of giving us, their fans and fellow human beings, a lasting euphoric escape from the limitations of REALITY. Even in making mistakes, WITNESS TREY's 6/23/12 FLUBBED LINE in Lizards AND HIS RESPONSE "Aww fuck! that was- (sings line) 'their clumsy end was perilously near,' (then-) ah! Yes, ah!" and the audience's response to that - an explosion of applause, laughter and joy, compare that to the dead silence and confused looks you'd get at...The Stones, say, if Mick did the same. Brian Ferry's title for Roxy Music's Love Is The Drug is right on point, as both the feeling & emotion of "Love" and as in it's conceptual- the title, i mean, in using "conceptual"- expression of that feeling and emotion through music. BUT THIS IS WHERE THE COMPARISONS MUST END. Just as I feel that IT'S AN INSULT TO PHISH WHEN THEY'RE LABELED and categorized and put away in SOME FILE Dewey decimal style AS A "JAM BAND". I guess it's because Phish defies categorization and those who put them in that category are just plain lazy and lacking in either imagination or (are unwilling or not) to take the time to have an understanding of the band. Trey IS virtuosic and agile, as well as being a master (mike, page & fish also, i mean holy fucking shit "also") of phrasing to TRANSLATE something of themselves to us by taking a song from it's seedling start through to it's blossoming finish.
