Show Notes

On October 29, 1994 Phish pulled into Spartanburg, South Carolina for their only show there to date – a Saturday night at Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, a 3217-seat theater opened in 1951 as the “Showplace of the South” adjacent to Wofford College. Spartanburg was the 19th show on a 46-date tour that crisscrossed the country spanning from Pennsylvania in early October to Southern California in mid-December. The Spartanburg show was the last date before a nearly 900-mile jaunt up to Glens Falls for Phish’s first modern Halloween show where they would introduce their first “musical costume”. Tickets cost $18.50 and the show was sold out, portending what turned out to be exceptionally difficult Halloween tickets. In an attempt to deflect Halloween rumors, the Spartanburg soundcheck leaned on Led Zeppelin’s ‘Physical Graffiti’ which got the crowd buzzing before the show even began. Spartanburg set a formidable precedent and recordings quickly made the circuit but this is the first opportunity to hear Spartanburg ‘94 in full fidelity, mixed from multitracks recorded for ‘A Live One’. Set I highlights included the opener My Friend, My Friend followed by Simple > Runaway Jim > Foam with a Simple callback in Runaway Jim to tie the segment together. A unique combination of Split Open And Melt > Buffalo Bill > Makisupa Policeman > Rift closed an impressive set I with the second-ever Buffalo Bill, the only Melt > Buffalo Bill combination to date, and only Rift ever to close a first set. This sequence left no doubt about the trajectory of this special night. Set II was a barnburner, kicking off with Down With Disease > The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday > Avenu Malkanu > The Man Who Stepped > Sparks – the second ever and last Disease > TMWSIY pairing to date and one of two Sparks played in 1994, adding to the blatant Halloween misdirection and foreshadowing the band’s 1995 The Who musical costume. After a killer You Enjoy Myself, Fish introduced his new (but shortlived) banana dress during Bike. Set II closed with Run Like An Antelope > Sleeping Monkey > Run Like An Antelope – the only time Sleeping Monkey was sandwiched between sections of Antelope. A stunning Harry Hood encore closed a legendary performance and a show for the ages. PRODUCTION CREDITS •Recorded by Paul Languedoc to digital multitrack •Mixed and Mastered by Jon Altschiller assisted by Danielle Warman •Post-Production by Kevin Shapiro •Technical Assistance by Ben Collette * From Mike’s journal: “10/29/94 – Spartanburg – Hashcake during break. Peak pot experience. During Sleeping Monkey it hit me hard. Harry Hood encore. It was 3d. A dream. Not remembering when I had walked on stage. All worries gone. Like heaven. My dream come true. Monkey seemed quite funny. Antelope fast and funny, ultra- different. Also set one – I liked Jim jam, felt in control. Simple had a great jam at the end. Buffalo Bill and Makisupa were cool.”   My Friend, My Friend (Anastasio/Marshall) Sparkle (Anastasio/Marshall) Simple (Gordon) Runaway Jim (Abrahams/Anastasio) Foam (Anastasio) Lawn Boy (Anastasio/Marshall) Split Open and Melt (Anastasio) Buffalo Bill (Anastasio/Marshall) Makisupa Policeman (Anastasio/Marshall) Rift (Anastasio/Marshall) Down with Disease (Anastasio/Marshall) The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (Anastasio) Avenu Malcanu (Traditional)* The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday (Anastasio) Sparks (Townshend)** Uncle Pen (Monroe)*** You Enjoy Myself (Anastasio) Hold Your Head Up (Argent/White)^ Bike (Barrett)^^ Hold Your Head Up (Argent/White)^ Run Like an Antelope (Anastasio/Pollak) Sleeping Monkey (Anastasio/Marshall) Run Like an Antelope (Anastasio/Pollak) Harry Hood (Anastasio/Fishman/Gordon/Long/McConnell)   All songs copyright Who Is She? "This was the last show before the fabled Glens Falls Halloween and we all knew it would be fire, especially because that entire Southeast Fall 94 tour was incredible (the Gaillard show, the Free show in Gainesville, etc). My buddy and I had just harvested a crop of ganja and we rolled an eight inch spliff by gluing together like 10 rolling papers. We decided not to fire it up until the right 'moment', you know what I mean, and when they went from Melt into Buffalo Bill it was like yep, and then the Makisupa comes right after that, an all-time Phish highlight for me. We burned down our entire section with that giganto-joint. People were like jumping for joy and high fiving and hugging and freaking out. This giant cloud was hanging over our section and the band was looking at us because we were on the fifth row in front of Mike and they could see the cloud. I feel like they played Makisupa because of us. We'll never know. So cool to read Mike's diary notes about this show and how he ate the potcake and had a transcendent experience because we all did too. So much to love about this show, the venue was amazing, sounded amazing, the Sparks, BB, Makisupa, odd song segues and combinations, the Harry Hood. This show delivers like no other. I saw a ton of '92-'95 Phish and this is my numero uno all-time favorite show."

"I never thought much about sparkle. But damn, I just didn’t get the joke. Now I do and it’s hilarious and beautiful. "
